This can be a traumatic and confusing scenario for dogs- it is NOT natural! It will take time to get this right.
We want them to not mind the car, but we also need them to be still and calm for safety's sake, not bounding all over and barking the whole time.
Break the car rides into pieces:
1) Getting into the car itself- have them go in with lots of praise and treats, reward for a paw or 2 first if need be, then hop out - repeat many times. Then, hop in, ask for sit and focus a few seconds, reward, then out of the car. Repeat.
2) The kennel or car seat harness itself- same idea.
3) Paired together- Sit/focus, reward. Hop in the car, sit/focus, reward. Buckled in or in the kennel, sit/focus, reward. Repeat many times until pup doesn't mind any of the steps.
4) The drive- Now you're ready for your first VERY short drive. Follow all steps above, back up a few feet, go forward and park. Trip over. Let pup come out of kennel/car seat, exit the vehicle and take a break. Repeat, adding time slowly. Also, offer a filled Kong toy for trips longer than 2 minutes. Hope this helps for now!
Car sickness- this can happen to any dog (or living being) at any time for a variety of reasons. COMING SOON!!!
