Polite Greetings: No more jumping up on people!

Sit for ALL things, including attention!

Manners start in the home with how we interact with our dogs, and how we allow them to interact with us.

If we greet them excitedly and let them jump up and bark and scratch us, then that's exactly what you can expect from them.

Not only is this behavior rude, it can cause pain and injury to those who try to interact with them. We may think it's cute or not a big deal. Our friends and family may be "understanding" and "not mind". But, if our dogs jump up on the wrong person while out on a walk, we could end up in some trouble or WORSE- they could injure a child or elderly person!

How to teach our pups polite greetings:

First, our pups need to be successful and consistent with a sit/stay. If we aren't there quite yet, click HERE to visit that protocol to practice this skill until you have reached the following goal: 5 feet away for at least 15 seconds.

Steps:

1) Enter your house calmly

2) As your pup approaches you, ask them for the Sit / Stay

3) When they do this successfully, walk slowly toward them and attempt to pet them calmly

4) Continue petting (gentle behind the ear massage to relax them) until 30 seconds is over OR if they get up

5) Do this every time anyone in the house comes in the door. Practice by coming and going a few times in a row.

*We are teaching them not only to sit/stay to be approached for pets but also to be calm during greetings

*If pup is struggling with too much energy, it's best to ignore them and walk around for a few minutes until they're calmer and then try to ask for the sit/stay again
